Started in 1173 and finished in 1372 the last of the bells which it housed were added in the 17th century.

The bell tower of this cathedral in Pisa started being constructed in August of 1173.

I don't know what art period that was, but I got the date from the official website. It is written in Italian with some English translation and has a great interactive photo tour.

It was not planed as art. It was planed as a tower and the ground gave way / settled. So it is a mistake.
