okay, sorry about my previous answer...which totally sucked, by the way.
I went to the java website and found the manual download instructions. If you click on the link below, it should take you directly to the instructions. Just scroll down a little bit, and the directions should be right there.

Steps to install Java on your computer: It is three step process
(A) Download
(B) Install
(C) Modification of AUTOEXEC.BAT
Note: if you are using the CD that came with book then ignore step-A.
(A) Download
1. Download Java 2 (Java 2 SDK V1.3) from http://www.java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/
2. Go to the web site and select
Microsoft Windows, Scroll down till you find Download Java 2 SDK, v 1.3.0 Software for Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 / NT 4.0 (Intel Platform), then
I. Select 1 bundle ~30MB.
II. Click on continue
III. Click on Accept on next page
IV. Click on FTP download.
File j2sdk1_3_0-win.exe will be downloaded to your computer. Make sure the size of the file is 30,916,766 bytes
Note down the folder name where the file is being saved.
(B) Installation
1. Using windows explorer go to the folder where the file j2sdk1_3_0-win.exe was save and double click on the file name.
2. Java will be installed in the folder c:\JDK1.3 usually, if it is different location, please note the location of this folder as you will need it later.
(C ) Modification of autoexec.bat file
1. Using notepad or any other text editor, open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, which is in the C: of your computer.
2. It should look similar to following file, but not same:
SET BLASTER=A240 I9 D1 T4
PATH c:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\jdk1.3\bin;C:\Novell\Client32; %PATH%
Set NWLANGUAGE=ENGLISH
doskey
SET CLASSPATH=C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERBASE CORP\INTERCLIENT\INTERCLIENT.JAR
3. add c:\jdk1.3\bin in path as shown above.
Note:
(a) The JDK1.3 is the folder name, you should put the folder name where java is installed in your computer.
(b) If you do not have a path statement then you can type following line:
SET PATH=c:\jdk1.3\bin;
smartdownload: if you use netscape as your browser then you should download this smartdownload program. This program can reconnect and start downloading if you disconnect in the middle of a download without having to start from beginning. With java being 20MB or so it is better to have this program especially if you are using 56 k modem.
