Is Jewishness more a matter or religion or ethnicity? Apart from self-identification, what (if any) is the common thread between non-religious Jews of European extraction and non-religious Jews of Middle-eastern extraction?

Jewish is more that a religion. Now there are converts to Judism, that is different. Jews are God's chosen people. Jesus was a Jew. Jews are are also called Hebrew. It is a culture, a race, an ethnic group, a religion, and a way of life. There are many religions with in the religion ---Orthodox, conservative and liberal Jews and things in between.including those who do not practice their religion.

by birth, they are jewish. some less observant branches of the religion still stress the "cultural" elements if not the practice.

it is religion first, then ethnicity. there are middle eastern jews, european jews, american jews, black jews etc.
