I like chocolate - it's browner than that other brown stuff that's not chocolate....
ermm.... geek??? me????
Cough... my cat isn't called Trinity and her predecessor wasn't called Captian James T Kirk....
LOL
Seriously though - I agree - these stereotypes are outdated, un necessary and harmful. Live and let live- it takes all sorts to make the world revolve in space ( the final frontier...)

I was married to a hard core Trek fan. He was even a member of Starfleet command. A star trek fan club designed around Star Trek. The reason they get stereotyped is because they take their hobby WAY to seriously. Case in point. My ex was trying to get to a part of Star Trek 2 where you hear communications from a space station to a dread naught. He kept hitting the rewind and stop button going back and forth, after about 6 times he snapped the tape. He would dress up to go to conventions and just took something and went out of control. Most of them outside of Trek or Star Wars lead normal lives, just don't mention their passion. You will find out what series they liked, what captain is better ect. ect. I used to enjoy Star Trek but due to my ex's fanaticism I don't care if it falls of the earth and disappears.

Almost everyone I know loves Sci-Fi and are all very different people. I think sci-fi is mainstream now. There are some people who stereotype everyone. They can't make sense of the world without labling everyone and everything and putting it in it's place. I blame upbringing. If you are raised to see everyone as an individual and judge them on their merits, then you won't see all sci-fi people as geeks or something like that. And if judgemental obsessive compulsive people don't like me or see me as a nerd, that's a good thing! Right? Who wants a big meanie to like them anyway?
Be yourself. Sci-Fi IS COOL. It encourages imagination.

Because most people who like that kind of stuff have an above average IQ, so the ones who do not and can't understand why a person would find that stuff entertaining, just get insecure. As if you know more things then they do. It's the oldest trick in the book, put others down so that you feel better about your self. Get's the spot light off of them so that people can't see how stupid they really are.

Because those are the sort of people that line up in front of the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings premiere, normally in cosplay, and the ones that show up at comicon or know everything about a franchise.

No, it's only if you like them ALL. I like Star Wars, but thats it. I hate Star Trek and all the others. If you love anything as long as it is sci-fi then you are a nerd.

it's not that liking that stuff makes person a geek. It's that most often geeks like that stuff. So it's kind of guilt by association. It's like Beavis and Butthead. Do you know many doctors or professors that watch that show ? Teenagers and slackers watch it (most often) so if you say you liked it bam you are a slackers. I am a closet sci-fi geek. I just keep it to myself :-)

Stereotypes are not false, they all come from some sort of truth. If you devote yourself to a show then yes you are a nerd or geek which includes all you American Idol, MTV watching, Reality loving fags.

yea, i don't get that either. Yet some people are fanatics. But I love Star Wars and LOTF and I don't care what people say! Well, now, people are crazy about those movies; Hayden Christianson and Orlando Bloom have kind of made those movies cool, too
