thanks so much. all your answers are inspiring. I actually know a bit of these things but never know where to start.

Ok so I already see my status icon. which is good.

What we want here is continue having our dsl broadband internet BUT we dont want it FLAT, all the time. We want to connect and disconnect AS IF it was a dial up connection BECAUSE of the risks of hackin. now thats not my decision but my cousin's. So how do i get this thing to connect and disconnect?

OK i think i found it! I just clicked on set up new connexion and there's 3 options: dial up (uh-uh), broadband not always on (yeah!) and broadband always on. I think the second one's the one i want!

Thanks!!!!!

If you are running high speed internet via your high speed modem, do the following:

Go to Start>My Network Places
On the left side under "Network Tasks" click on "View Network Connection"
Right click on your "Local Area Connection"
Once that window opens check mark the section "Show icon in notification area when connected"

Your done. You should have your icon next to the time.

Depends on your ISP. Most of them have a proprietary system designed to be "always on". They push out DHCP, etc. and expect to always have a connection. For a novice, changing this network connection to require a logon/logof can be a bit tricky. Without knowing your exact setup, it would be hard to walk you through online.

Your computer should be connected to your modem via an ethernet cable. It's "hot swappable" (capable of being inserted or removed without hurting your system). Why not just plug/unplug the cable? Simple fix and doesn't mess with your connection settings.
