De la soul: what/who were they talking about??

Question

De la soul used to refer to the term "plug 1"and "plug 2" in many of their songs. But what the hell did that mean?? Were they referring to their microphones? This has bothered me for about 16 years!!

ok, sorry i should rephrase the question. I know that Posdnous etc were called "plug 1" etc but i dont understand the significance of the term "plug". Does anyone know?

"Though the idea was quickly abandoned, the original concept behind the group was that Mase was PA and Posdnuos and Dove were the microphone plugs, transmitting messages from Mars. This is the origin of the nicknames for Posdnuos and Dove, Plug One and Plug Two, respectively."

The members are Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicœur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (P.A. Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three). The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Paul Huston (Prince Paul) with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'". Prince Paul was also sometimes referred to as Plug Four.

Member Kevin Mercer was known as Plug 1, David Jude Joliceur was Plug 2 and Vincent Mason was Plug 3. It was their nicknames..
