And do you think we maybe exposed to them on a daily basis, especially on the highly visited sites with seemingly non-commercial contents?

The FCC made a policy statement in 1974 regarding subliminal messages as "contrary to the public interest", but IIRC there isn't actually a law against subliminal messages on television or radio. And there isn't a federal agency that has regulatory authority over the Internet, so I'm not sure who would enforce an Internet anti-subliminal message law (possibly the Federal Trade Commission if the message was in an advertisement.)

Are we exposed to them frequently? Your guess is as good as mine, but there have been many critics of the technique who suggest that the method isn't effective. So even if it is happening, you might not need to DRINK RC COLA be too concerned. ;)

Marketing doesn't have to use subliminal messages, although I do believe it might have been tried before 'Hidden Persuaders' was released - also about the time Soylent Green came out. Madison Avenue has changed the old adage - 'Necessity is the Mother of Invention' to 'Invention is the Mother of Necessity.' "Be the first on your block to have a _______ by Wham-o!" Fill in the Blank - Slip 'n Slide, Hula Hoop, Frisbee, etc.

I just read a free online novel about such a scheme. I'm sure it stretched reality a bit, but was somewhat interesting. It was called "Blind Guides" by Scott R. Stahlecker. Here's the link:
