I have noticed that when I am informed by Yahoo! Answers that one of my answers has been chosen by other users as the best answer, I get an email that reads as follows: "Yahoo! Answers: Your answer has been chosen as the best answer". Why put the word, "answer", at the end of that line or sentence? It is not needed. "Your answer has been chosen as the best" would suffice there, wouldn't it? It is amazing to me how the educational system has eroded since I graduated back in 1969! Most people can't even read and write properly anymore. Is it a matter of not knowing how, or is it just plain carelessness? Whichever, I find it to be very annoying to say the least. Thanks.

Also, they could word the email as follows: " Your answer has been chosen as the best one". Even this would be an improvement over the way they currently word it.

Sounds to me like someone is just looking for more things to complain about. There is technically nothing wrong with their sentence. I will however make a note to not ever vote for or choose your answer as a best answer. I wouldn't want you to have to suffer the pain of receiving an email you find gramatically annoying.

The school system likes to pretend that they are coming up with new ideas and they create new ways of teaching. These ideas, however, were tried before and failed, but the decision makers want to look like they are doing something important with taxpayer money so they change the status quo. Change often requires moving away from the basics and this is a big reason why many people have a problem using proper English. Another reason is that a lot of the English teachers are not trained properly so cannot teach grammar the way they should. Perhaps, teachers should be allowed to stick to the basics and then think about getting creative. High school kids cannot even write a good paragraph! These are the "smart" kids. I believe the problem is a mix of not knowing how and carelessness. With the newest computer lingo, people do not want to spend the time checking grammar to make sure it is proper.

I don't think the educational system is to blame. Yahoo answers and other Internet sites often have words misspelled or inappropriate grammar. I think it has a lot to do with typing skills, everything being done on computers, and ‘THE NEED FOR SPEED’. Everything is done very quickly and no one really cares about misspelling or grammar errors. This isn't 1969. People often speak with slang also. As far as the ‘yahoo answers’ goes. I think it is more of a way of naming the actual category even though we all know its Yahoo answers. It's not really needed but I can actually understand it.

I just joined this forum two days ago and I have been wanting to suggest that they give (or take away) points for grammar and spelling in questions, answers, and comments. But if Yahoo! personnel don't know grammar, then my suggestion is of no value. Sounds like Yahoo! doesn't have enough staff to do the job, anyway, so they would have to rely on other users to grade spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Oh Horrors! 99% of the postings I have seen so far have at least one error in spite of the Spell Check feature provided.

I find myself agreeing with you. I graduated in 1971. We had to diagram sentences along with endless grammar practice. Spelling was also drilled into our heads. I am saddened at the lack of communication skills I see now. Even my most talented students have trouble putting together a descriptive lab paper. I teach science, but I also give term papers and grade on grammar and spelling. I am trying my best to make sure the English language as we know it continues to exist.

I think you are overreacting. The educational system has not degraded. the thing is, you are on an internet forum. People are careless when writing online. I agree with poster number one. Untwist your knickers! There is more to life....

No, it's not just you who notices this. Apparently, we are considered a little obsessive to comment on it though. The strangest part to me is I had to know how to read, write, spell and perform basic math in my head for my first job. I believe those skill requirements have been replaced by popularity contests in Corporate America though.

It does not mean the most smart answer, but the most that relates to or close to a good answer. If you are too educated, you should not be reading yahoo answers, you should be reading 10lb books.
