Some people seem to believe that their so-called personal life is so secret and , well, personal, that any question you ask is nosy. Other people are so open, and sharing, they are a lot more fun for everyone to be around.

I think the difference in your question depends on whether the ones you are with have a secret or something to hide, or whether they are the open, sharing people.

I don't know, my husband says I'm nosy but I think I'm just curious...I guess is probably the same thing....we're all nosy and curious at the same time...we want to know things because we're curious about it, therefore we're nosy....

Asking past the point where it is obviously uncomfortable to the person you are questioning = nosy.

Curious: "How is your job going?" Answer: "Just fine, thanks."
Nosy: "No, really, have you been written up for anything? Is there anyone you don't like there? Give me all the dirt."

Curious: "I heard your mother was ill, how is she feeling now?" Answer: "She's much better now; thanks for your concern."
Nosy: "What did she have anyway? Is it contagious? How much did the hospital charge?"
