It depends on what email program you use. The real information on where the email came from is in the email but your program doesnt show you all that garbage.

You have to find the function under edit or view that says something like "all headers" or "raw view" or something like that. Then copy the WHOLE email and send it to someone that handles internet complaints. Your internet providor can usually help you.

They will contact the sending system. A peer to peer request. That will usually get it handled.

File a police report and contact your Internet Service Provider
and make a copy of the email if you have not done so already!!
Before you make a copy of the email, get the full headers on it.
This will identify the ISP that it came thru!!

Quite often the email id is spoofed (ie the name of the account/domain name isnt what it appears). So first check the email header to trace the ip address of the originating server. Then do a reverseIP+whois lookup to confirm.

Then you should decide whether to request help from the email service provider or goto law enforcement officials.

Forward it to your email service provider (eg yahoo if your email ends in @yahoo.com.....or whoever you get your email through).

Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do to pinpoint someone. Often people high-jack email addresse to send these kinds of emails or they make temporary ones and then kill them, or they use false info.

You can call your local police department and they can do a limited investigation if they have an On-line Task Force.

Best bet is to block the address she got the email from and report them to your service provider.

Check the email headers and report it to their ISP and the authorities if you deem that necessary.

I would go to the police and they might be able to provide you with additional assistance and tools that they have available.
