I live in an area with alot of rattlesnakes myself. If you take a bag of Lime, and spread it around the perimeter of you yard the snakes will stay away. I didn't believe it when someone told me about it. But when one of my dogs was snake bit and died. I had to try something, and so far it has worked. Apparently the Lime burns the underside of the snakes when they try and cross it. but the dogs won't mess with it. I spread it about 6 months ago, and I haven't seen a snake since. and all of my dogs are still healthy, so all I can say is that it must work.

Another way to keep rattlers away is by having Bull snakes in your yard. They are completly safe to have around, and they eat Rattle snakes. the only problem is they don't like to stay around if you have dogs.

You can try a very small pore mesh fence around the perimeter of the yard, but it won't be totally snake proof. They sell a plastic mesh at home centers.

Truth is, rattlers are very bad biters and dogs are usually smart about snakes.

I have a friend who goes on the mountain trails with his border collie and she's been bit 3 times because she provokes the snake. No major problems, not much venom in a rattler bite.

If you can patrol the area and kill any snakes you find you will cut down on the chances of any getting in the yard.

keeping brush down helps. Get a fake but realistic owl in garden centers and post near the yard. There's also products you can get at places like Tractor Supply that repel snakes.

Go to your local feed store. They sell something called "Snake Away". You put it around your yard and somehow it works to keep them away.
