Who knows with those crazy Brits. Why do they call gas "Petrol"?
Language is very fluid and changes over time, all the time. It is kind of like how there are different words and phrases between the North and South. Accents affect written language as well.

That's a generalisation. I always called mine Mom. Other kids used mam, mammy and mummy. I think it's a local thing.
I had a Granpa and Granny (mom's) and a Granddad and Grandma (dad's). My grandchildren call me Granddad and my wife Nan. Who knows? I'm a Brit - English to be precise.

English is the language originated and spoken in England, little kid. Oh, it is also spoken in some backwoods such as America. You made this change, then ask yourself.
