The National Football League (originally named the American Professional Football Association) was formed in 1920. The first game under that organization was played on Sept. 26, 1920, in Rock Island, Illinois. The Rock Island Independents beat the St. Paul Ideals 48-0.

That wasn't the first professional football game, but it was the first NFL game.

The NFL was originally the APFA, or American Professional Football Association. This league was formed in 1920, to stop players from jumping team to team, and to control salaries.

The first official game took place in Rock Forest, Illinois, at Douglas Park, where the hometown Independents crushed the St. Paul Ideals 48-0.

The APFA changed its name to NFL in 1922.
