All that small claims court will do is get you a judgment against your half-sister. You may not want to do this if you want to continue to have a decent relationship with her. And unless you have some sort of proof that you lent her the money, you may not even be able to go to small claims court. You can probably go online to the Los Angeles County court website and look for info on small claims court. It may answer your questions better. I just hope you've learned from this experience to never loan money to family or friends. Most of the time it just causes problems. Good luck.

Very messy. If you can prove that she owes you $700 then a small claims court can order her to pay the amount to you. If she has no funds, however, you may wait a long time to get the money. You may also be awarded interest. Perhaps you should discuss the matter with her rather than going to court as this may cause more trouble than you want. It does cost money to go to court - even small claims court - and it will cause a lot of resentment even though you are the wronged party.

What is more important to you, the $700 or the relationship with your half-sister? Sometimes you have to accept the fact that you won't see the money anytime soon. Be patient and she might surprise you after she gets a new job and back on her feet.

all you can get is a judgement by the court. they don't force people to pay.
you can put a lien on her house, or garnish her wages., but since she has no wages, I guess you're out of luck. and if she owns a house, I figure the bank owns more of it than 700$
i figure, chalk up the $700 as "stupid tax" and never loan money to a family member or friend again.;

S/he can order her to pay, but that doesn't mean she will. And, considering the fact that she lost her job. That is all it will be, an order. You will spend more time and money taking her to court, over all. And, your effort will stress you out much more. If you need the money, take her to court. If it is out of sheer principle. . . let it go, just know what type of person she is . . know not to lend her any money again. . . and count her off your future charity lists.

they could probably make her sell 700 dollars worth of her possessions to get the money or order her to get a job and pay you

no wages to garnish
since she's impoverished, you'd have to wait until she had a job to garnish wages....and who knows how many others are suing her as well, waiting to garnish her
sometimes it's just not worth wasting the time & effort
tax advice: claim it as a bad debt on your taxes and write it off

Winning a judgment doesn't mean you will get paid. You haven't been paid by now write it off because you never will.
