You could buy them in a set. All of the spheres contained gears of different types attached to rods. The rods inside all went between 6 openings situated at 6 points on each sphere. You could connect them with couplers and make small devices such as submarines, vacuum cleaners and even floor-walking robots.

I think it is Tinker Toys also. Here is a link to Cool Retro Toys from the 1990's. It lists hundreds, incase that isn't what they were called. Maybe if you see the name you will know! Good luck!
