Flag basically means you are highlighting the mail.. for later attention.. for you to easily spot the email from all other mails..
Sometimes we need to act upon an email that we receive, but can’t do it right now. In Outlook, we can create a flag to remind us about the message at a later date.
or some softwares even allow you to flag it and give you prompt for attention if you would like to be reminded about that email and so on...

If you're using Outlook, you can "Flag" an e-mail in order to make it stand out so that you can remember to go back to it or mark it as important. Outlook has 6 different color flags and you can assign meaning to the different colors; you could make the green flag mean action and the red flag mean urgent, etc.

Flaggning also notifies your email provider about the person that sent you the mail that you just flagged and in future your ISP my filter that email address or may even blacklist it for spamming.

"flag!" is a word used to highlight - or tick an item
like select it
so you can do something with it
it's also a programming word
