From a safety point of view, swimming in a pool probally is more sanitary than swimming in the river. Also, in a pool you do not have to worry about the current or animals effecting you.

First, the river better be clear of pollution, otherwise do the pool thing. Second, the suit depends on your physical condition. Some bodies need to be as covered up as possible!

Don't go swimming in a river using a two-piece!

When I was growing up we owned a river bank house and went swimming all the time. One spring, when we were in our early teens, a group of us went into the river and one girl, wearing a two-piece, got caught in the rapids. She managed to get to safety easily, since we'd all been in that situation before and knew how to handle ourselves, but her top wasn't so lucky!

Poor girl flashed the entire village and never heard the last of it.

Either one have almost the same hygiene prohibitions. I would say the one piece vs. the two piece is based on your preference. The two piece would be cool in either circumstance however, it comes to mind where a friend lost their top in the river.. which ran far down the bank...
