Because they're not even close by a long shot. Their albums are chock full of filler. They're not even rock music anymore. They've been relegated to spitting out pop albums that border on adult contemporary and it's almost embarrassing to hear such idealism, as noble as it may be in purpose, sputtering out of an older man like Bono's mouth these days, especially since he's lost all of the artistic and poetic credibility that he once possessed in abundance. Compare the lyrics of U2 classics like Sunday Bloody Sunday to pathetic slabs of bullsh*t like Vertigo or Love And Peace Or Else. At one time (between 1983's War and 1987's The Joshua Tree), U2 may have been the best band in the mainstream, but now they're a pathetic, festering, rabid dog that is being petted by the public when it should be euthanized for our protection. Now that U2 is winning bushelfuls of Grammys whenever they release a record, I suppose they realize that they don't have to put any effort into their craft, and while How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was an improvement over the schlockfest that was All That You Can't Leave Behind, it still compares very little to the heights that this group of Irishmen hit in the mid-to-late 1980s. The reason that you think that U2 is the best band in world history is because you are an ignorant radio listener who doesn't delve beneath what the record companies spoon-feed you with. Music is supposed to be a journey, not a convenience. Put some effort into looking for music and you'll find thousands of bands that are better than U2. You'll also find hundreds that are better than U2 were in their prime. I don't mean to be antagonistic, but I hate to see such outlandish claims being made, as anyone with a greater background in music would never say such a thing.

They play great music no matter what, they are the biggest band in the world, they made one of or the best rock album ever, they are giving, they are rolemodels... do I need to go on? They are just simply the best. They've changed the face of music as we know it. So many of our music today is influenced by them too. You'd be amazed if you knew how many. And they keep going for the fans. Not them.
