In the MLB, it's the team with the best record of the teams that didn't come in first place. In the NFL, it's the two best records of non-first place teams. In the NBA, they don't have a wild card system -- it's just the top eight teams from each conference, with a first round ranking preference based on who wins their division. In the subsequent rounds, I believe the alignment is based on best record vs. worst, regardless of where the teams finished within their division. As for the NHL, I don't know the answer, but I think they follow a format most like that of the NBA.
