It does not gurantee you the hostname as the owner has some grace period for renewing his registeration for the domain name.

After a certain period of time (it varies from registrar to registrar), the name gets dropped and becomes available to others.

ICANN instituted new guidelines for domain name registrars. All accredited registrars have to implement something called a "Redemption Grace Period." It's a 30-day holding period that gives the owner time to renew an expired name and the registrar time to resolve any fraud complaints.

If you really want that domain name.. you can try contacting the owner with whois information.. and see wht he wants to transfer the domain name to you.. but again as you would be approaching the owner he could ask for exorbitant price for it.. well depends how badly you want the domain name..

link below gives you info on policies of renewal of domain names.

Hope this helps.

No, backordering gives you a chance to buy the domain when it expires, the system probably will send you updates as time goes on. But if the original domain owner updates the registration, adds 10 years for example you are out of luck. I even had a domain where it did expire, which then you have to wait at least 30 days or more for it to go public and then it is luck if you can purchase it quick enough.

if it's a good name, forget it.
the owner will renew it and you will not get a chance.

100% of all good domain names were taken up by 1999. I started registering names back in 1995. In 1995 it cost $250 dollars to register 1 stupid name. Can you believe that??

Now it is as low as $4.95 a name.
Well, that's because there are NO GOOD NAMES left out there!

Nope. Some people set their domains to auto renew. That is, it will renew automatically without them having to do anything. And most of us have set our domains to auto renew. So don't backorder. Its just a waste of time and money.

Yup, Dr. Christian is right, all good names are taken. :( However I was able to register a few good domains. :D
