Les Francais. They won in 1998 and automatically qualified for the World Cup 2002.
That was the last time this was done. Even though Brazil won the World Cup in 2002, they still had to go thorough qualifying rounds to again qualify for this years World Cup.
This begs the question, who was the first defending World Cup champions not to qualify for the next World Cup. The answer will be in the future. Italy could be the first one, you never know.

FRANCE was the last country to qualify automatically to the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals when they defeated BRAZIL 3-0 in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final.
BRAZIL have to play in the qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals despite winning the World Cup in 2002. it was the first time that a world cup champions not longer qualify automatically to the next world cup.
so, ITALY now must play in the qualifiers to qualify to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals!!

France for the 2002 Japan/Korea games.
Brazil did not qualify automatically for the 2006 games. I was a new rule implemented by FIFA.
And I'm quite sure of that, cause I'm brazilian. Brazil finished the qualifying South American round in 1st place, over Argentina.

Brazil did not automatically qualify for 2006; they had to qualify through CONMEBOL. France was the last automatic qualifier as champion in 2002.

Brazil for WC 2006, Brazil won WC 2002 in Japan/Korea they needed to qualify sorry i forgot.
France for WC 2002, France won WC 1998 in France
someone asked a question about the first defending WC champs not qualifying for a WC well Uruguay won the first WC in 1930 and they were host, but Italy didn't come over to attend the WC, and Italy was host for 1934 WC and the defending champs Uruguay returned the favour by not showing up for the 1934 WC in Italy.
