Not knowing your particular e-mail system (Outlook, Express, Lotus Notes etc), I'd try highlighting the letter and then pressing the control key and the u key at the same time. ctrl-u frequently underlines a letter. ctrl-b bolds it. ctrl-i makes it italic

You can under line it by hitting ctrl u before the letter, typing the letter, and hitting ctrl u again after the letter. the underscore is when you hit shift and that one button after the 0 on the top of the keyboard
