I read somewhere that herbal teas can possibly cause miscarriages in pregnancies, is that true? I love lipton Iced Tea but I didn't know if that would be considered an herbal tea or if it was only a problem if it was drank in large quantities.

Lipton Iced Tea is not a herbal tea. Herbal teas can include ingredients that can hurt the fetus. Here is a sample list of ingredients to avoid:cohosh, pennyroyal, and mugwort, Ma Huang or ephedra, as well.
Look for ingredients like cinnamon, lemon, orange, mint, etc.

And here is what March of Dimes says about some herbs:
"Herbal preparations are classified as dietary supplements by the Food and Drug Administration and are not regulated like conventional drugs. Manufacturers are not required to follow any standard quality controls, nor do they have to perform safety or effectiveness studies before marketing their products. As a result, the quality and strength of an herbal supplement can vary greatly between two batches of the same product and between products from different manufacturers. Some preparations may interact with other medications, potentially making them less active or less safe.

Herbal teas can be soothing, and pregnant women bothered by nausea and vomiting may be tempted to use them. But they should not be taken without the advice of a health care provider. Large amounts of some herbal teas, including peppermint and red raspberry leaf, are thought to cause uterine contractions and may increase the risk of miscarriage or preterm labor. This also is true of many herbal tablets, capsules and extracts, including black or blue cohosh, ephedra, dong quai, feverfew, juniper, pennyroyal, St. John's wort, rosemary and thuja"

Lipton Iced Tea is a black tea, not an herbal tea. Most black teas have caffeine, which can be harmful when you're pregnant. I'd stick with decaf.

As for herbal teas, they typically do not have caffeine. However, someone above listed certain ingredients that can be harmful. That's a good thing to research, on the internet as well as with your doctor.

If you're going to have a problem with that, it would be the chemicals and/or the caffeine. It's made from tea, not herbs. Herbal tea is not tea--it's an infusion of herbs in hot water. And many herbs have effects on your health.

I drank Iced Tea all the time while I was pregnant...but be careful...there is a lot of caffeine in tea...buy the decaf tea bags and make it at home...that's what I did.
