It's neither more or less ethical to build your own versus purchasing one. As long as you're not stealing it, ethics has absolutely nothing to do with the acquisition of a laptop.

I don't know what you mean by ethical, but let me tell you about my desktop. I built a desk top with a 64bit processor and 4GB of ram. I ended up downgrading ti 2 GB. The motherboard had no onboard video so I added a card. Microsoft told me I had video driver problems. I bought another video card. It turned out the problem was with my on board audio. I bought a audio card and the Geek Squad told me to uninstall the onboard audio from my bios. Add to that I had to spend $200 for Windows and purchase a DVD decoder.. All together I have spent $1000. Yet, I have the satisfaction of building it myself, with some expert help. When all the bugs are worked out I am going to add four hard drives in a raid 5 configureation. I hope to use four 300 GB drives. I will have 900 GB usable and 300GB backup. I hope this helped you.

Why woulds ethics be involved? As long as you pay for everything you use. Otherwise, companies wouldn't sell parts AND systems. You just need to make sure that all the different parts you buy for the computer are compatible with each other. Systems already put together were already tested for functionality by the company that made them.

if you mean build your own like buy parts and put them together yourself, then either it isnt possible or ive never heard of it. if you mean call up the factory and order some extra ram with their standard laptop, then it doesnt really matter. of course building your own desktop is more ethical than buying a dell or compaq computer thats put together by child slave labor in a 3rd world country.
