Alex Smith still has the potential to be a stud, but he doesn't have the greatest supporting cast around him right now. Having Trent Dilfer around to tutor him will be a plus, and having some adequate RBs in Kevan Barlow and Frank Gore and good TEs in Eric Johnson and Vernon Davis will also help. However, the WR corps is average at best (even more so without Brandon Lloyd) and apart from aging OG Larry Allen and recovering-from-injury OT Jonas Jennings, the O-line isn't that great either. Smith is going to need to utilize outlet receivers so he doesn't get sacked 48 times (last season's sack total vs. 49ers.)
There is hope, but the growing pains likely are going to continue this season.

He has more potential to be a Stud than a bust. Only thing that bothers me is that he played at a mid-major school. I think if he would've played at USC, or a bigger school, I think his transition to the NFL would've been smoother. It's hard to judge any rookie QB by their first season, I mean, look at Carson Palmer? Also, you got to have a good supporting cast; good o-line, good receivers, etc. Alex Smith is lacking in this department. At least they drafted a good receiving TE. This will help him out quite a bit. Give him 3-4 years, and I think he'll make a better QB than Rothlisberger or Eli Manning.

Alex Smith will be neither a stud nor a bust. Instead, I think that Alex Smith will be an average quarterback like Drew Bledsoe and the present day Kurt Warner.

Now you can't just consider Alex Smith himself to be good, his whole team has to help him be a good QB. Don't forget. The lost their best WR, but to replase him they have a really good rookie TE Vernon Davise. I think V Davise will be a dominate player why? Because you have to think... V Davise is a supremly huge/fast guy. He's not a Randy Moss but he IS like a taller, and faster Jerome bettis, and The bus was awsome last year. So i think if Alex Smith and Vernon Davise, can connect, they will be okay.

A bust. He was drafted 1st overall, but he plays on a terrible team. Unless he gets a change of scenery, he wont be getting much better for a while.

If you consider anything less than winning a Super Bowl then a bust. Statistically he'll be neither.

1 (touchdown) and 11 (interceptions). Not anything like the 2 - 22 season he's about to have.

Bust. He lost his only good reciever Brandon Lloyd. I just don't see him doing any good in San Fran.
