Cut the lawn 3 to 3 1/2 inches high you can reduce pesticides a lot by doing this. Some ppl with Fescue cut at 4''!

Do NOT water the lawn except if the grass is dry. Hint: you can tell if the grass needs watering by walking on a few sections. If they are squishy, they are fine. If they are more rough feeling, then water.

Crab grass needs a pre-emergent in the spring--next year.

Cut high except for the first and last mows of the season.

you can get a fertilizer/herbicide combo to put down the next time that you fertilize to kill the crabgrass. however, at this time of the summer your fight is probably futile - the weeds have taken hold and have too strong of a root system. you may try letting your grass grow a little longer before mowing - the taller glass can block sunlight from helping smaller weeds develop. Most likely you should begin planning for next summer, unless you want to manually pull it.

there are some "yard safe" weed killers that you could try spot spraying - but the giant yellow patches in your yard may not be worth the satisfaction of killing the crabgrass!
