I think that Trey Parker and Matt Stone aren't really geniuses, just two canadian guys. What's more important is that they're brave.
They dared to create a TV show with next to nothing (The first pilot was made with cardboard cutouts) that would adress some of the most controversial, intelligent issues and still make us see different angles on them.
If they were to be considered geniuses, it would be for Eric Cartman's creation. Eric is everything sadistic and cruel in the world, but Trey and Matt still have the ability to make us laugh at him, even though we know he's wrong. By creating a single character to be the humorous outlet of everything bad, they've made us be able to laugh at things that might normally disgust us.

They are brilliant geniuses. Taking seriously big issues and favoring the side they disagree with to show everyone how ridiculous it is. And having two eight year old boys save everyone and help by explaining why things are right and wrong and by being the only realistic and sane ones. They remind us how we can loose a sense of reality when we get all caught up in politics and greed.

Oh yes, they are! That show is hilarious!
I also liked Beevis and Butthead, but I still think South Park is better.
