Is it just Denver or do most people have this problem? How hard is it to understand you have to yield to traffic that is already in the circle?

People every where are in a hurry to go no where. These days people are so full of themselves that they dont care about anyone else. Ive been in a position where im in a turn lane in the middle of the road waiting for the light turn yellow because of heavy traffic and then the light will turn red so ill have to turn to get out of the way and have an on comming car coming towards me turn in front of me and if i had not stopped there would have been an accident. People are just plain rude these days.

It's not just Denver. Almost nobody in the US knows how to use islands/circles/roundabouts (whatever you wanna call them).

The reason is historical. In Europe, land ownership & road patterns follow ancient topography: hills, streams, animal paths & the like. Relatively few roads meet at right angles. When North America was settled vast tracts of land were available for division & tools had been developed to accurately survey them, lay out straight lines & divide them into rectangular lots -- a lot of rectangular lots. Thus streets meet at right angles, which are conducive to control by simple signs. It would cost a fortune & use a lot of land if most American intersections had traffic circles; tho' traffic would probbly move better. So American traffic engineers are more likely to put up stop signs & traffic control lights where Europeans are more likely to design circles.

Traffic islands are not common in America. They are not always part of standard driver's ed courses in America nor are they typically on the DMV tests. Few Americans have experience with them and may be a bit confused when faced with one.

Of course, if there is a yield sign there it should be a bit more obvious and failing to yield in that case is just plain bad driving.

The only place I've been where EVERYBODY understands traffic circles is in New Jersey, but probably because they are so plentiful there
