Why is prostitution against the law? If you are over the age of 18, you can have sex for free with a stranger over the age of 18. But you can't get money for it. Does this make sense?

Well, first off it's not illegal everywhere...

In general though most people probably consider it to be immoral, and that which is immoral tends to become illegal as well. For example consensual homosexual sex was illegal in some states up until a couple of years ago, for no better reason than homosexuality tended to be historically frowned upon by Christians who make up a majority of the population of this country(and on a side note thank God for the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment). Most Americans also tend to look down upon prostitution, and few politicians are going to risk their careers fighting for someone else's right to be a hooker.

Personally I tend to support the libertarian position that that which causes no clear harm to someone else should be legal, but alas the rest of the world doesn't always think this way.

In the long run it makes no sense.

Prostitution laws are as archaic as marriage laws. These types laws are meant to preserve morals and "family values" and were created by the knowledge of the times. Current knowledge and current enhanced freedom dictate these laws be revised. It is those either unwilling to have an open mind or attempting to hold on to political power (gov't and/or religious) that say morality would collapse if these laws were updated for a free society.

The same question can be postulated for gay marriage and the same for marriage in general.

Ask yourself this question:
Why is it legal to form a loving and caring family of either a same sex couple or polygamous adults outside of marriage yet illegal inside of marriage? Same logic/illogic applies.

This is an area where the separation of church and state has not been completed.

The argument that such unions are immoral or bad for "family values" does not hold. As long as the family is loving and caring is the only thing that truly matters.

Eventual these types of prejudicial laws will become extinct as the same prejudicial laws against certain races and women were made extinct (in free societies).

Unfortunately, once the laws are changed it will still be quite a while before they are truly realized and implemented for all.

But in the end they will be realized, because in the pursuit of freedom for all... it is inevitable.

I know of a sex offender who was trying a similar line of thought for his appeal. If he took something that was ordinarily for sale without paying then it should be theft not rape. The fact of the matter is humans are not merchandise and your argument is simplistic.

I myself think that prostitution should be legal; but it will be hard to change the laws because no mainstream politician dares to offend the moral majority.

Nope. I know of a few hot chicks I'd gladly pay. Kind of like being in the military and how you can sign up as early as 17 (with parents blessing) but you can't drink until 21. Even in country's where it is legal to drink at 16! WTF! Some puritan many moons ago came up with that crap. Probably the whole deterioration of society garbage they try to fill our heads with now a days.

I look at it this way, supply and demand. If someone wants to pay for it and the prostitute is willing to be paid for it then who does it harm? Anyone have an answer for that?

There is no difference than me paying my gardener for mowing my lawn. I need it mowed and am willing to pay, he wants to mow it for money, I pay. Simple.

It seems the oldest profession in the history of the human race is coming under fire again.
It all depends on where you live & stuff like that.
Some cultures is accepted no matter how degrading it may seem.
