Sounds like you need to replace the belt. when they stretch out they start to slip which will cause the burning and it is a short time before the belt will break. Also while you have it apart to replace the belt check and clean the bearings area as this can hinder the free turning of the roller. It may appear to be spinning freely but it may in fact be causing too much tention on the belt which will cause the belt to slip and start to burn.

The roller that beats the carpet is stuck and your belt is burning on the motor's spindle trying to spin it.

Clean out the hair that is stuck on the rollers ends and make sure it can spin freely.

Depending on the condition of the belt, this burning usually causes pits in the belt which will gradually break it. If the condition is bad you might also need a new belt.

Check if it is direct drive or has a belt. One of my vacs that has a belt, slips from time to time as it stretches. The rubber puts off a burning smell when it is not connected correctly.

Are you sure it is just the belt.
If you can replace it do so.
But I have a feeling the motor
might be shot. Once you
put a new belt on and it still
smells after a few times than
you might just have to replace
your vacuum.

It needs a new belt. When you turn the vacuum over the beater bar is spinning but when it is on the carpet it is not. The belt has lost elasticity.
