I'm 23, male, and never had acne until I moved to Florida about 2 years ago. Since then the breakouts started and just don't seem to stop. It can't be due to food cos I have limited my diet to no cheese, oil, soda, etc....basically all the foods that are sometimes blamed for acne. I eat healthy with a lot of veggies. I have tried virtually all the products out there including face washes, acne scrubs and also the much talked about Pro-Activ solution. Nothing had any effect whatsoever and I'm wondering what could put an end to the daily breakouts on my face.

Story of my life! I've tried the Pro Activ stuff too - no results. If you have the spare cash see a dermatologist about blue light therapy. It isn't irritating (like a chemical peel might be) or invasive - and it worked. It's pricey though...

A change in climate to a more humid area i.e. Florida, can be to blame for the acne. Although there is not much you can do about the humidity it could explain why it happened.

To treat it don't get to aggressive on your skin; it can actually backfire. Acne isn't always caused by dirty, oily skin. If you remove all the oils (which serve as a layer of protection on your skin) then your body will work harder to put them back causing more breakouts. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle non-comedogenic cleanser meant for the face, then use moisturizer or a toner cream, and again make sure it is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores). I use Moore Unique Toner Cream, and it has done wonders not only on the acne but also on the fine lines that at 24 I have begun noticing. Also use a spot treatment once a day like Oxy with benzoil peroxide, not only on the pimple but in an area the size of a quarter around it to prevent furthur spread.

One last thing, don't expect instant results give it a week or two but be consistant with the treatment.

As a 27 year old female, I can sympathize with your situation. I too noticed that moving to Florida made my skin horribly worse. It took several years until I have gotten it somewhat under control. Here's what I've done:

1) Visit the dermatologist. Depending on your needs, she can recommend some very excellent medications. For me, personally, I was very limited in what medications I could take since I am trying to have a child. The only thing available is a topical cream: FINACEA. It works fairly well for reducing redness.

2) Stick with eating vegetables. I have found that raw and steamed veggies is the best way to go. One of the best is CARROTS. Other goodies include tomatoes, spinach, and strawberries.

3) Drink a ton of water. Crystal Light is a good substitute for water. You get the flushing effects, with taste, and with minimal calories.

4) I use Neutrogena Oil Free products. Morning -- Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash/Mask. Afternoon -- Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. Evening -- Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Mask/Scrub. I find the scrub is vital -- exfoliating is necessary for someone with oily skin!!! I follow my washing with the finacea, and then use Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture SPF 15 to protect my skin and moisturize it. Not that you need this info, but I also only use Neutrogena make-up.

I too tried Proactiv to no avail. I wish you luck, this is a horrible problem to have (and I know and still know, nothing works 100%)!

Here are some REALLY good, and very inexpensive ways to treat most acne at home. Try each method (unless you’re allergic to the ingredients) until you find one that works best for you. Good luck =) BTW, I know some of these may sound bizarre but try them…what have you got to lose other than the acne!!

1. Put toothpaste on your acne before going to bed. (Make sure it is paste not gel). It should reduce the swelling of acne noticeably.

2. Dab egg whites on your acne and leave on for 20 minutes or overnight. It’s supposed to pull the infection out of the blemish.

3. Wash acne infected areas twice a day with warm salt water. This reduces oils in the skin and helps to dry the acne up without further agitation.

4. Use ice on acne before going to bed. This works best on pimples that have not yet formed a head. It reduces swelling and helps to prevent scarring.

5. Wash and dab acne with cotton balls that have been soaked in vinegar. Let dry; do not wash off immediately.

6. Place strawberries leaves over your acne and the alkalinity will help to reduce the swelling.

Acne Treatment: 7 Things You Must Know!
Robin Araoz
Let me ask you this...

Are you suffering from acne?

Do you know what is causing it and is there any effective acne treatment?

Studies show that an estimated 80 % percent of people experience acne at some point. No one knows exactly what the cause of acne is, but there are a few theories.

Let´s take a look at 7 of them:

1. Acne normally begins between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

This is true in both males and females due to changes in hormone levels. These hormones, called androgens, will enlarge the facial glands. The oil produced by the glands is known as sebum. The hair follicles shed dead cells too quickly and the cells and sebum form a blockage in the gland.

2. Pressure and rubbing from tight garments.

Adult with acne should avoid tight-collared shirts that might irritate the acne further. Adult athletes may notice an outbreak of acne from equipment such as backpacks or athletic helmets.

3. Acne can also be caused by genetics.

Studies have shown that a family history of acne can affect whether you have acne and the severity of it. So if your mother or father had acne as a teen, chances are that it will be a contributory factor to the cause of your acne.

4. Factors linked to women

Women have several factors that men don’t that can be linked to the cause of acne. Women go through several phases of life that cause their hormone levels to change. These changes can cause acne in adult women between two and seven days before their menstrual cycle.

5. Pregnancy and hormones

Pregnant women also experience a fluctuation in hormones.

Those who may have previously had little or no acne may see pimples during their pregnancy and for a time after the birth of the baby until the hormone levels return to normal.

6. Menopause and hormones

Menopause will cause changes in hormone levels for woman and can be a cause of acne. Women also tend to wear heavy makeup when experience an acne outbreak, which only worsens the problem by further clogging pores.

7.Stress.

Especially in adults, stress can be another cause of acne. When you are stressed, the hormone cortisol is produced.

Cortisol will worsen any acne you already have. To prevent stress-related acne, try relaxation and meditation.

Some adults experience acne from picking at blemishes on their skin. You should never pick at or squeeze a pimple, blackhead or any other blemish on your face.

This can only cause more acne and possibly an infection. When cleaning your face, avoid harsh facial cleansers(they cause the creation of more sebum) and scrubbing your face too vigorously.

Acne treatments

The sad part is that most of the acne products are sold over the counter for treatment.

Most over-the-counter acne treatments are topical and come in the form of a cream, soap, lotion or gel.

Acne products normally contain benzoyl peroxide (good for killing the bacteria and possibly reducing oil production), sulfur (helps eliminate blackheads and whiteheads) and/or salicylic acid (cuts down the speed of cell lose).

More severe cases may require prescription acne medicine that is topical or oral.

Oral acne medication can help reduce both the growth of the bacteria and inflammation of glands.

I suggest you go to a dermentologist, so they can tell oyu exactly what is the problem. Don't worry, i understand how your feeling, and i hope your acne problem is solved, and in some way i helped

Pro-Activ didn't work for me either and I tired everything else. Finally I just asked my doctor and he gave me two perscriptions that really helped, well actually three but I don't think birth control would work for you. So ask your doctor about it, what can it hurt.
