Well if speaking of an individual, I would suggest by their name.
However if speaking on an issue or soemthing along that line "Ie. posting on a livejournal about Massachusetts gay marriage law for example" I normaly use "gay" if refering generaly to homosexual males, Lesbian if female, and homosexual if both. I have never had anyone get upset with that

(rolling eyes at the bible thumpers) I prefer to be called Dell. It IS my name after all. Bisexual also works if you're talkin about orientation. Otherwise, I try not to worry too much about political correctness. Fact is, if ya take any subject from botany to balaklavas, you'll be able to find people who hate it with a passion.

PeskyWabbit doesn't seem to understand that her values aren't applicable to everyone else. I would think if someone found those terms offensive, then the same term could be applied to them as any other person with a sexuality. Sexually active person.
