Recent advances in polygraph technology indicate that soon a machine might be available that can detect if someone is lying with 100% accuracy. Looking a little further into the future, if such a machine was minaturised and assuming costs were reduced such that it could be made available to the general public, what might happen if everyone had such a device?

Yes, but most salespeople would immediately starve to death.

The world would continue and would stabilise. For a while people will lie, deceive and generally try to trick the system but before long they would realise how futile it would be and things would settle down after that.
Sure, people might be upset with some of the things they hear and things may get stirred up for a while, but it WILL settle in time.

What a cool question! I wish I had thought of this one!

The world would continue to function, but a MAJOR restructuring would have to take place. Liars would have to start utilizing buffers in their plans (like people who didn't have the detection devices that would believe them and perpetuate the lies for them, etc.). For the common person, this would be difficult at best.

Once the majority of people realized that they couldn't get away with lying, the things they would normally lie about would become sources of grief for them, ultimately influencing them to change unfavorable behavior for acceptable behavior.

The world would be a much better place.

Scripture tells us that Satan is the father of all lies. It is his single greatest tool to wreak havoc upon us. It would sure be nice to strip it away from him.

Thanks for asking this question!

What a great question!

I would've thought that democrasy as a whole would collapse as no politician could stand and say the whole truth and keep office. So we'd most likely end up with a dictatorship who wouldn't care if it lied.

I think we'd be screwed. Either that or people would have o decide what is an acceptable lie vs. an unacceptable lie. I would guess that the little "white lies" that many people tell (not me! Never! LIES!) would be skipped over while politicians would be in a turmoil cause so many of them would be losing thier jobs.

I don't think society would completly collapse, but it would take a big adjustment.

I could just see the honest advertising.
Come take our not very safe but very sporty car for a test ride. We received a very low safety rating but what the heck, she looks good. You will be asked to sign a waver protecting our butt, should your test ride have any of the usual problems with acceleration and braking. Your safety is not our first concern, but we think about it. Come drive one of our cool looking cars today! Don't tell them * sent you.

The end of the world, as we know it would take place. I was going to say the end of civilization, but, that would be rather presumptuous, since I'm not sure we have one going on the planet at this time.

Well the American and British govenments would certainly be the first to go - so it would depend on whether civilisation could cope without them - It might be worth trying.

Well, providing that we all don't freak out kill each other first, I think we'll slowly realize that everyone of us lies, even to ourselves.
Eventually, we'd learn to cope with it and overcome our lying after a few generations.
