Isn't that an example of the very intolerance that many gays claim they oppose?

Julia,

Good point. If someone were to do that, (not that I would) they would probably be suspended from school, but if a person wears a Gay Pride T-shirt, we're all expected to show tolerance. It's a double standard, really. The rules that apply for some do not necessarily apply to others.

Excellent point.

When and where were high school kids prohibited from wearing a shirt like that?

I would have to know the FACTS of the situation before I could make a reasonable opinion about it. I cannot just accept that a person was not allowed to wear this shirt... JUST because of the content... SIMPLY because that is what I was told.

I wasn't aware that there was a new fad going around high schools that had that slogan.

I think making an issue of ONE specific incident in ONE specific school... in one specific school system, is really a relevant topic.

If that high school student had a history of being abusive toward homosexuals then I would have a problem with that shirt. If that person one day just ... out of the blue... thought it would be funny to wear it, then why would ANYBODY care?

I'm certain there is more to the issue than is presented in your question.

Let the kids wear whatever they want, straight pride, gay pride, God save the Queen, Doctor Who t-shirts, or whatever, as long as it doesn't say anything about harming another creature.

Would have thought YahooAnswers would have kicked you out for all the junk you type. People make sure you report insulting posters that repost crap. Why all the hateful questions in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, questioning area? This one is the closest thing to a real question you have ever posted there.

REPORTED.

Because every day is a straight pride day! Look at all the media images, or even real heterosexual couples, who you see kissing, having sex, falling in love...don't you feel fortunate to be someone who, if you are proposed to in a restaurant, are guaranteed to see everyone else in the restaurant applaud for you? Don't you feel fortunate that you need never be afraid that people will attack you or shout things at you if you kiss in public? Don't you feel fortunate that you don't need to move to a different state, or a different country, or go through a legal war, in order to have a baby or get married? Don't you feel fortunate that almost every single movie or TV show you see features heterosexual couples?

Do you really need, on top of all that, to wear a "straight pride" shirt?

Here's my favourite quote about that kind of thing:

"I get sick of listening to straight people complain about, 'Well, hey, we don't have a heterosexual-pride day, why do you need a gay-pride day?' I remember when I was a kid I'd always ask my mom: 'Why don't we have a Kid's Day? We have a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, but why don't we have a Kid's Day?' My mom would always say, 'Every day is Kid's Day.' To all those heterosexuals that ***** about gay pride, I say the same thing: Every day is heterosexual-pride day! Can't you people enjoy your banquet and not piss on those of us enjoying our crumbs over here in the corner?" -Rob Nash

The point of wearing a "pride" shirt is that it reclaims something that was either taken away from you, or never given to you in the first place.

Feel lucky that you belong to the majority whose love is respected.

its for the same reason that you can't wear a "white pride" t-shirt to schools. Even though it is an example of the intolerance minorites claim they oppose.

Its a matter of political correctness. Someone who is gay may be offended by the shirt, and think its directed towards them personally. The school is just thinking about its liability in my opinion. Its along the same lines as the whole " Don't say Merry Christmas, say Happy Holidays" in school. I have a friend who works at the school and was actually told that - unless a child said Merry Christmas to them first. Gettin crazy ain't it?

The same reason someone can wear a FUBU shirt or a "black power" shirt but a white person would be beat and thrown out for wearing a white power t-shirt.

I think both are ignorant, but I dont' lie the double standard and reverse racism (if there is such a thing, i think racism is probably racism, whether white on black or visa versa), so no differnent with issues of sexual orientation.

Because heterosexuals were never persecuted, but were rather persecuters. The validity of heterosexuality is not under attack so there is no reason to defend it. Also, heterosexuality is the norm, and to declare pride in the norm is not necessary and really more implying that the alternatives are not something to be proud of.

You didn't want to know that, though. You just wanted to post a dumb question so you could spout off like a typical dim-witted Christian.

The same reason that high-school kids can't wear a "White Pride" t-shirt to school. Those in the majority are supposed to be ashamed of what they are, don't you know?

Because straight people are NOT in the middle of a human rights battle! Heterosexuals already HAVE rights, so there's no need for them to publicly declare their pride. GAY people are fighting for our rights just like the blacks have to, the women have to... THAT'S WHY you don't see men wearing shirts about male power or having male rights support groups. Minorities show their pride as a means of fighting for rights we don't have. Majorities do not need to do this in mockery.
