In addition you will have to demonstrate 5 years lawful residency, good moral standing, support for US constitution and pass a test for US history and English language.

If you are from a different country, you have to be a resident for at least 5 years then you can apply for the citizenship. In order to be a resident you have to be married to an american citizen and your spouse can do the registration for you, and while your spouse does this you have to be a legal immigrant, that means that your time in america needs to be valid it does not have to be expired.
