My husband & I purchased one and it was made around 1899-1900. I haven't been able to find out much about them except they were made outside of Chicago by Steger & Sons a division of the Singer Company that makes sewing machines. It's a beautiful antique & would love to know the history of it. I have the serial number and know the patent date was in 1899.

I bet they have information for you. The town is named after the company your piano was made by. This information was a bit difficult for me to find. Thanks for the challenge :)

The Steger piano company was located roughly 30 miles south of Chicago along Illinois Route 1. It was founded by John Valentine Steger, a German immigrant. Steger was a furniture maker and promising business man that created a virtuoso piano that was known worldwide.

The village of Steger, formerly known as Columbia Heights, was Incorporated in 1896 with money given by John V. Steger in exchange for naming rights of the village.

A great business man and philanthropist, John Steger passed on the business to future Steger generations until an untimely fire destroyed the factory in the early 1970s. At the time of the fire, the factory was no longer making pianos but manufacturing television and radio cabinets.

Please check the link listed in sources for some great photos of the Steger piano factory and other Steger locations from years long ago.
