They must not, considering the narrow viewpoints they have, and their lack of perspective and understanding of history.
It's impossible to deal with someone from the Southern culture because such are stubborn individuals who refuse to broaden their minds, and who villify education and enlightenment as being tools of liberal elitism. What goes on in the public education system of the South? Are libraries in the South unaccessible?

To those responding with accusations that I am biased and bigoted for generalizing an entire population, I think it's obviously plain that I was speaking with hyperbole in my generalization. I did not think it necessary for intelligent responders to require a disclaimer on my part recognizing the many literate bohemians from the South (Twain being a top-5 favorite of mine).

If someone makes the claim that humanity is destroying nature, does one need a disclaimer to also expouse the many enviromental activists who work to protect nature? No. It's simply accepted as a generalization. No one would accuse said person to be anti-human, biased, and bigoted against humanity.

Well, by classic literature, I'm interpreting it as something like 'To Kill a Mockingbird' or 'Huckleberry Finn'.

They deal with a lot or prejudices from the past against blacks/african americans. Actually, the stories take place in the South, and they've become read all over the place. As you can probably tell, they haven't exactly generated much popularity in the South. In fact, the list that comes out ever year for the petition of banned books contain the two titles that I've mentioned. They're probably one of the most controversial titles ever. It's been on the list for a very long time, but it's never been fully passed. Three guesses as to who's the biggest supporter of getting them banned?

i love classic literature though I became 18 at the moment so i assume i do not count number anymore. Like Kelsey reported, youngsters do not favor to artwork anymore. each and every boy I meet is a gamer. What befell to the days even as boys went out and performed activities(*drool*)? each and every of the females I meet are mall rats which isn't inevitably a foul ingredient yet i imagine a good e book is sensible. also, lots of them are stuck on reading and rereading Twilight... I gained't pass into why i do not imagine it has any literary benefit yet anyhow, those are my 2 cents. Too many youngsters imagine classic literature is purely too hard to understand yet my expertise is in case you study extra, it will change into extra attainable. youngsters do exactly not understand solid literature anymore and it is unhappy. that is a waste of the eye-catching language contained in the classics that purely would not exist in youngster literature. i imagine it is unhappy that the purely reason many youngsters %. up a classic is that a instructor forces them to. likely does no longer have even tried reading one except that replaced into the case.

Some of this country's best writers were from the south: William Faulkner Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, and the list goes on and on. The culture in the south is rich and fertile. Probably the richest and most fertile culture this country has to offer, and in some respects on par with the European cultures. Your comments refers to their cultural upbring. I live in a New York City suburb, and let me tell you I listen to illogical opinions all of the time. New York City is filled with opinions that sway with trends. While in the south, folks there have substance generated by their culture. I enjoy Hank Williams country music, NASCAR, and drinking with the good ole boys. Yes, I'm a New Yorker and I take deep delight in the southern cultural way of life.

Well I lived in the south for a short while and didn't find any lack of classic literature in their libraries.

Is it possible that you think that anybody who doesn't agree with you is stupid? Strangely enough I find myself wondering about the education level of liberals at times! Don't they read history? Don't they believe in the open exchange of ideas? Then I have to remind myself that even though both sides can be educated about facts and dates both sides tend to see explanations for events from their point of view--they read what they want into it. Find yourself a smart conservative to discuss things with and you might get an education yourself while educating them.

Have you spent any time in the South at all? I am a "southern conservative" and yet, I love classic literature. And I go to the library at least once a week and take my son to encourage his love for reading.
