Cold Mountain is AWESOME!! But I recently saw one called Battle Royal which is a Japanese film and is apparently banned in the US. Not the best acting, but pretty interesting. The basis of the movie is a class of 42 7th graders are put on an island and forced to kill each other off until there is only one person left. There's more that goes into it, but that's the main idea.

Dogfight wilt River Phoenix and Lili Taylor. It's a romance--but not your standard kind and it is set in the 60s with a Marine who is heading out to Vietnam--and his last night stateside in San Francisco. Both performances by the leads were outstanding. I still love it to this day. It always makes me miss River Phoenix--he was such a good actor.
