I'm not sure if you want a loft bed frame/platform or a loft bed mattress?? As far as wanting a bed frame-- the best loft is one that is built into the space. That way your platform fits the specifics to your area. I'd find a local carpenter/handyman (via local underground paper, word of mouth, etc) to build your platform based on your specifics. (Is it a loft in a room with storage underneath?? Is the platform being build in a loft space?? What's the best way for access--ladder, steps, etc) I wouldn't go online -- the specifics usually won't conform to cookie-cutter shapes. Now, if you're looking for a loft mattress-- then make sure you mention this to whomever you're buying your mattress from. Loft matresses have stronger edges and are made specifically NOT to be used with a box spring. Hope this helps. I've had numerous lofts in my many apartments. The best ones (most secure) are build right in to the walls. (and count your losses when you move).

A loft bed is easy even without plans. Measure your mattress, build a box for it to lay in, then stick the thing on legs. Support the legs with cross beams, add a ladder, and youre done. If your gonna get ambitious, find plans for a dresser or a desk or buy a cheapo one to install underneath.

There are very inexpensive alternatives that will cost you much less than going to Home Depot, buying all the materials, cutting, and doing all the work. Here is a great selection of loft beds http://www.kidzthings.com/kids_loftbeds.html that are priced right and wont break the bank. Check them out. I am sure you will give up on building your own loft bed.

IKEA has a loft bed that may be cheaper and you still have to build it yourself.
