What is their motivation? It seems childish to me to "tattle" on other posters.

I agree with you. They only do it because they have no life.

It's not just tattling, it's helping to enforce the rules. This is a site that is visited by tens of thousands of people a day (actually another good question.. how many hits does this website really get every day? I have no idea...) and many of them are kids, or people of all religious backgrounds, and many people who would find certain things objectionable. Since the whole idea of an online community is much like a physical, real-world community, certain standards have to be set to make the environment friendly and welcoming to everyone. So using foul language, or discussing topics considered obscene by the general community is unacceptable behavior, and when you signed up, you agreed to those standards and acknowledged that you understood that your question would get removed if you tried to say something objectionable and got reported, and might get your access to the site removed if you kept on doing it. Remember, reporting someone only calls their behavior to the attention of the administrators -- they still look at the question and determine whether or not it really does violate any rules. So if someone decides to just report you because they think they're funny, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll get into trouble. It's not tattling or being mean; it's making sure people behave like civilized human beings toward one another.

Some people report others because they answer the person gave had no relevance whatsoever. I have saw on here countless "I don't know but thanks for the points" answers. The people who write these answers have nothing better to do than waste not only their time, but other people's time as well.

Another time people get reported is when their answer is intentionally mean and hatefull toward another person. I think that if you are going to answer someone's question, at least make an attempt at giving a solid answer.

Some people us this forum for inappropriate reasons. Yahoo answers should be used for information purposes. Unfortunately some people do not use these postings for that reason. They come here and are sexually explicit as well as using language that should not be used here. These people should be reported because they are upsetting those people who are here for the reasons we should be here. That is to either find an answer to a specific question or give the benefit of their wisdom to someone who asks a serious question.

REPORTED!

Just kidding.I for me only report if I think it concerns a pedophile and that did happen once or if people just call to kill certain groups. This happened several times. Also just a bunch of swearwords with no message in between gets reported .This also happened several times.
I enjoy it here very much and tolerate very much in my opinion, also cos you need to follow the community guidelines in your answers and if a question makes that impossible, yes I report
In all other situations I can agree that it is childish.
I'm glad to be out of the closet, this poor Edna girl took a lot of heat for my actions,LOL

It probably is mostly tattling. Someone didn't like one of their answers, so they pick on that person.

The only time I've ever reported was when I saw a very sexually explicit question in a category that children were likely to read (something like Homework help).

Sometimes people do things here which are intentionally mean and deserve to be reported. For example, a used put a link on his answer to a question, claiming it was his source, when it instead was a link which filled my screen with porn and crashed my browser.
