If I remember correctly, originally the word "patriot" meant "a person opposed to the existing (British) government". People who were content with the extsting government and displayed its flag on their front porches were called loyalists.

Also, paying taxes is not a function of U.S. citizenship. U.S. citizens living abroad do not pay taxes in the U.S. Foreign nationals living in the U.S. do.

A patriot does what they can for family, community, state and nation. And they care about all of the above. I would call a person who spends an hour a week volunteering to clean trash up in a local park more of a patriot than someone who just cuts a check for taxes.

No. You would still have to pay your taxes even if you disagreed with everything the country stood for, putting a flag up would make you a patriot though.

Being a good citizen, and serving in the nations Military services reinforces your patriotism. Hanging a flag shows pride in that patriotism. Paying taxes makes you a strong citizen. Following the law, it's administrators, and supporting good leadership makes you a good citizen! Whining about your opinion not being represented, believing fools, and acting in a immoral (unlawful) way is NOT patriotic or good manners!

That's like saying putting the "Support our troops" sticker on your car - which is the absolute bare minimum you can do - makes you a patriot.

Real patriots support their words with actions.
- They vote.
- They volunteer to help the less fortunate and the environment.
- They send supplies to the overseas troops themselves or with their community.
- They believe in free speech and the opportunity for all to express themselves.
- They fight for peace, equality, and justice for all.
