Some countries are often governed by people who are more interested in their own personal welfare than that of their people.
For example. Iraq has tremendous oil resources. Everyone in Iraq could live well. However, when Saddam was running the show he built many palaces for himself while a great number of people lived in poverty.
Most countries where there is little individual poverty are run be people who allow their citizens to seek the best life for themselves. While the leaders are often wealthy themselves, there is enough opportunity for most of the people to gain a descent standard of living.
Also, there are countries in the world that are poor in natural resources or some other commodity that people outside their country wants. These countries do not have the ability to sell what they have to the richer countries. So their people often live in poverty regardless what their leaders do.

The answer is exactly what the fuss concerning countries wanting to have nuclear weapons is all about. (not that I want them to have), but the point is :The weaker a country is militarily, the easier it is for its natural wealth to be looted by the stronger ones, the easier it is for its market to be used as a dumpster. The bullying tactis of the Bush Administration have made it an imperative for all developing countries to have something to protect themselves. To blindside us, they pretend that countries like Iran and N Korea , armed with nuke, would attack America. They know it's a lye.No one would dare attack this migthy country. The mighty Soviet Union bluffed all it wanted but it new better. Some suggest that the poverty of the poors stem from weak leadership and corruption; there is somee truth to that but, whenever the people of those countries try to bring som order by voting the right leaders, the deciders use everything in their political arsenals to stop it. They have decided that those countries should remain failed states so that they can produce cheap labor, their citizens to be used as Guinea pigs for scientific purpose, their markets to be used as dumping grounds and why not, use them to dissuade people to rock the boat for "look how bad other countries are doing; look how nice and sweet it is here" all the while, they are mortgaging our kids future for their own benefit. Unfortunatly, we, as the sheeps we are, take their lies to the bank and feel superiors to the unfortunate citizens of those countries instead of holdig the heartless accountable

Most poor nations get money from rich countries, then the rulers of those countries take the money intended for economic development and use it for their own needs.
Happens time after time.

Much of the poverty in the world is caused by the corruption which is rampant. Even relief organizations have to often pay protection money to the corrupt governments. The world i snot a nice place and the sooner people learn to deal with it the better for everyone.

much of it is because of corruption in those governments. Some of it is because of free trade agreements everywhere. They create a race to the bottom as far as income for the lower end workers in any country goes. And a great deal is because they do not have, or value education. You can nver get out of poverty without education.
