No, I couldn't when I owed money to my old bank. They were able to see when I went to open a new account (at a whole different bank), they said I had a "charge off" - so I had to pay it back before I could get a new account. It took awhile but I did. In the meantime I was on my mom's account, so my pay was going in there and I was able to access my direct deposit money that way.

There is one option for you. If your parents or siblings belong to a credit union they can have a checking account opened for you. I have bad history with commercial banks and was able to open a checking account with my father's credit union. They work just like commercial accounts, so you get checks and a debit card. Sometimes they are actually better because they don't charge alot of fees.

that is tough..I know someone who did that, after he turned into a bum after divorce. he bounced a check to dominos pizza, and basically disappeared from society for about 2 years.. upon rejoining us all in the real world, it took him another 2 years to be able to open a checking account at another bank, which included him paying all kinds of fees, etc.
