Yes it does, the reason being that helium resonates differently as it passes through your vocal cords. A lot of gases will make your voice sound differently actually. For instance the gas from one of those compressed gas air dusters will make your voice sound lower. But DO NOT try that--the substance in gas dusters is toxic and can be harmful or fatal if inhaled.

Yes, but after the first couple seconds the pitch quickly begins to drop and the effect is lost. Don't be surprised, but don't try to counteract it by breathing in a lot more helium -- too much oxygen deprivation can cause brain damage!

Yep it does!
What helium does change is the timbre of your voice. Timbre is what allows you to distinguish between the same note played at the same volume on two different instruments. Timbre also allows you to distinguish different elements of speech (such as vowel sounds) from each other. For this last reason, timbre is very important to interpreting speech.

The pitch of your voice is largely determined by using the length of your larynx. it truly is why men, with their more effective larynxes, oftentimes have decrease voices than women. even as the sound of your voice originates interior the vibrations of your vocal cords, string-formed gadgets are not very sturdy at emitting sound. only as a violin employs a field to assist its strings in generating sound, you take advantage of your larynx to assist your vocal cords in generating sound. Which pitches your larynx produces properly relies upon on its length and on the speed of sound. both honestly a mode of factors are significant because the air itself vibrates and both reducing the dimensions of your larynx or permitting sound to pass swifter from one fringe of it to the different will improve the pitch of your voice. because the speed of sound is way more effective in helium (965 m/s) than it truly is in air (331 m/s), the pitch of your voice rises once you breathe in helium gas. however, once the helium has left your lungs and is replaced by using air, your voice returns to known.
