I think first you need to remember that writing is a process. It is something you develop over time and continue to improve, but you never perfect it. One thing you can do is read and expose yourself to a variety of writing styles. This will also help to increase your vocabulary. Then practice your writing daily or at least a few times a week by keep a journal or notebook. Write down your random thoughts, daily experiences, memories, etc. You can also copy quotes or song lyrics that seem significant to you. You can always use them later to stimulate thoughts. Once you begin your journal, try to work at giving more specific detail using descriptive words, descriptive phrases, and new vocabulary. If you want to write more formally, try using examples or comparisons or contrasts to explain things in your writing. Start small and just continue to build......Your writing will improve and grow

Writing isn't natural for me, especially as English is my third language. Therefore I try to revise a lot. I reread my emails and even this answer several times to make it sound clearer and to catch any spelling mistakes before I hit the "submit" button.
There are several things that you can consider developing simultaneously: building a large vocabulary, learning the basic structures of the language, and actually writing.

In addition to reading a LOT and writing as well, you will also want to make sure that you start getting feedback about your writing. Some of it you can get from friends, but you'll also want professional feedback. Or if you're interested in a particular area then you may want to ask for feedback from experts in that area.
Moreover, you may want to consider starting a blog. Nothing like having to write publicly every day (that is, if you impose that on yourself) to improve your writing. You can get a free blog here: http://www.blogger.com or you can try Yahoo!'s 360 service.

On that very subject, the advice that I've read over and over again in writer's journals, etc, is that in order to become a better writer, read, read, read, read. By reading a alot of various writing styles and by accomplished writers, you learn alot and helps to improve your own writing skills.

Read a lot of the genre you are hoping to make your career in. It should help you recognize common current styles and traits.

First, write a lot. Practice make perfect. Second, try typing correctly. I don't think you'll get published if you can't capitalize correctly.
