the paint on my dining room walls is peeling and i don't know why?

how should i best repair it and how can i prevent it from happening again...it is latex on latex so it isn't that....

Sounds like the wall might have been dirty and the paint did not adhere. Just scrape off the loose areas, feather the edges with sand paper, prime it and repaint. That should fix it.

Was the old paint (underneath) a semi-gloss or gloss? The only Laytex paint you can paint directly over is flat. All others need to be sanded and the higher the gloss the more you have to sand it. Most Home centers sell a product called liquid sandpaper. You just wipe it on and it eats into the old paint so it has a rough surface for the new paint to adhere to.

Also the more expensive paints stick better. If you had any wax or grease (like near a stove in the kitchen) you will need to put a good primer on first.

All the answers before mine are good and possible causes. if its not moisture, its probably not cleaned. On my older home and reason why I reply is that I found some hidden oil stains that the latex paint did not adhere to. It was a result of kids playing with some kind of colored pen that left a really bad residue. I had to apply a base to it before painting it over again.

Somebody painted the wall without cleaning it properly and letting it dry, or you have a water leak on the other side of the wall. Strip it, sand it, prime it, and paint it

COULD BE MOISTURE IN THE ROOM OR EXCESS HEAT, I THINK TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENIG AGAIN IS TO SAND IT DOWN GOOD AND WIPE THEN REPAINT THE AREA

You may have had a water leak.Find it, fix it, then sand refloat repaint. Or if wood sand and fill,repaint.
