I started my 5 month old son on some cereal. He keeps gagging on it. He takes some down but ends up spitting half of it out. Do you think its too early for him. I put some cereal in with his bottle and he takes that good. I would like to start him eating from the spoon. Any suggestions?!?!?!?

My son did that for a few days...I think it's a texture thing...just keep trying. If he still won't take it try mixing in a little (a baby spoonful) of baby food fruit stage 1 into the cereal to give it some flavor...it could be a flavor thing...that's what I did and my son ate it with no problem.

Good luck!!

The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend starting an infant on solids until 6 months, and even then it's not necessary. Many babies don't start eating solids consistantly until they are closer to a year old.

If you want to continue feeding your infant cereal from the bottle that's your business (although it's not recommended), but there's no reason to push feeding from a spoon. Maybe try giving him a small spoonful once a day and get him used to the idea. He'll start eating when he's ready.

One thing you need to understand about infants... they suck their meals so going from bottle to spoon that young is hard. Not bad though.
My childrens doctor suggested that thinning down the mixture and using a small spoon and letting the baby suck it off there to start helps in developing the forward muscle in the tongue.
If the mixture goes in the babies mouth too thick then the saliva, what little there is at that age wont thin it down for them like ours does for us.
Very little amounts at a time is the best and I do mean little amounts until the baby gets used to food that way.

He probably isnt ready for it...if it works in the bottle, then that is fine...maybe it is too thick a mixture for him to tolerate with a spoon. I would wait 2-3 weeks and try again. Every baby is different and is ready for solids at a different time. Dont force him. He will take it when he is ready!

I had the exact same thing with my son. Loved it in a bottle and hated it on a spoon. He is 9 mths now and still hates it. However he loves the cereal that is mixed with water. (It contains milk in the cereal) and he loves all other solids. Try changing brands and tastes. Alternatively try porridge as it is smoother.

if it is making him gag, that is a sign that he is not ready for solids yet. putting it in his bottle is a bad idea because it can be a choking hazard. a clump could form in the top of the nipple, it will clog it so your son will suck harder and it may come out too fast. maybe wait a month and try again with the spoon.

Your not using water are you....add some baby juice or baby fruits...my 6month old daughter didn't like it at first either...I started her when she was 4 months...plus its something new to his taste buds....keep trying for atleast 3 to 5days...with the same thing....once he starts getting used to it, than he'll be good to try other foods.

It's not really good for a 5 month baby to be eatting hard food!\
maybe smush it down so he doesn't choke!
