Rent a room instead, or a portion of a house somewhere.

Look for a landlord that is an individual person and not a corporation. Or sublease or someone renting a room. You will have a better experience and it will be cheaper than renting from a large complex that will check your credit.

There is also less likeliehood of being sent to collections, an eviction or being taken to court if issues arise.
