I prepared the table as directed but the stain doesn't take and the wood looks the same. I am using a black stain.

If the Table was stained before and you sanded it you may need to sand it more. If the old stain was oil based and the new is water based it will repel the new stain unless you sand well beyond the depth of the old stain. try an oil based stain and see if that works better. Some places will let you bring a peice of the project in to try different stains on it. You may also want to get a wood conditioner to wipe on first. This will help the new stain absorb evenly so you wont get a patchy look.

The wood is still sealed. You should sand the table some more. The stain you are using should be an oil base stain. Re staining an existing piece with latex stain probably won't work, because older furniture was stained with oil base stain, and the two will repel each other.

MAKE SURE YOU SANDED THE WOOD DOWN GOOD AND BE SURE TO STIR THE STAIN GOOD BEFORE APPLYING IT.
