It's anywhere from $1000-$2500 to ship by truck across the US. The fees for shipping by boat would be more and the time it will take is significantly more. Gas would only be about $400-$500 for the 2700-3000 mile trip based on about 20mpg.
You may want to check into shipping it by train but I still don't think you'll beat the cost of driving unless add in the additional travel expenses, ie hotel and food for 4-5 days.

You will probibly be way better off contacting a professional transporter to ship from coast to coast. Fuel costs are about the same as the shippers costs, but you would also have hotels and meals in your costs.
As for boat costs- you are paying to have it taken through two ports, inspected at customs and the boat ride itself- which all add up quick. Unless its some exotic car, which again is better of being shipped by truck, its not worth it. Boats are for continent to continent travel where truckers can not go...

California to VA by boat? Probably not. I mean, look where it's going to have to go, down around Mexico, to central america, through the Panama canal, and finally back all the way up to VA. That's got to be at least four times the distance of what it would be just accross the US. Find a shipping company that specializes in shipping automobiles, or find a relative to drive it accross, and buy them either a bus or plane ticket back. I would think by boat would be kinda pricey compared to ground.

No way, the cost and time to go through the Panama canal will be very high.

Definitely cheaper to drive, second cheap would be to put it on a truck.

Transport it via truck but driving still would be cheaper than any alternative.

Shipping on a tractor trailer (look up "haulers" in the local YP) should be your best bet.
